SOLACE ON THE LINE

In 2012, Susan Hartman and Todd Heisler, a staff photographer for the New York Times, collaborated on a photo essay about a group of Ghanaian live-in home health aides—far from their homes in the Bronx—who are connected by a prayer call.

Pastor Benjamin Boakye, of Assembly of God church in the Bronx, leads the daily call from his cell phone. It sustains his congregants as they care for their elderly patients.

Solace on the Line, a multi-media show based on this photo essay, opened at the Bronx Museum of the Arts in 2013.  Heisler took some of the photos during an Assembly of God Sunday service.
